Specialist, Health (Electricity Services)
 
The Health Specialist (Electricity Services) is responsible for assessing operational risk related to health and hygiene, and providing leadership that will enable the development and implementation of best practice health and hygiene programs/strategies.
 
This role is accountable to the Senior Manager, Health, Safety & Environment (Electricity Services), in collaboration with Corporate and Water Health Specialists to support operations in achieving the workplace health and hygiene goals within Distribution, Transmission, and Energy Services.
 
The accountabilities of the position include:
 
  • Provide input to the Senior Manager, HS&E Electricity Services,in the development of the EUI Health (1 - 2 year) strategy/plan. Develop, Implement and review the Health strategy within the context of the Electricity Services business plan (including mission, vision, values, strategic positioning, operational plan and resource plan). Health strategy items will include but not be limited to lead, asbestos, noise, indoor air quality, EMF, biological’s, health protection/surveillance, and radiation.
  • Ensure on-going effective internal and external partnerships with Electricity Services HSE group, Human Resources, Legal, unions, regulatory bodies, and other Manager/Senior Manager positions in Distribution, Transmission, and Energy Services to facilitate health and hygiene initiatives.
  • Communicate the Health strategy site partners as appropriate. Ensure they are aligned, integrated, position appropriate, and include performance expectations and deliverable metrics.
  • Strategically plan and identify the necessary budget requirements for the provision of health support to operations. Identify, administer, and monitor health surveillance aspects associated with health and hygiene risk, including but not limited to PFT, chest x-rays, audiograms, biological lead monitoring, and respiratory fit testing as per corporate protocol.
  • Assess opportunities and threats; recommend appropriate plans to improve the operational effectiveness and subsequent implementation for the area. 
  • Establish, monitor, measure and report performance metrics, analyze and identify issues impacting operational performance, and establish initiatives for continuous improvement to ensurehealth and hygiene objectives are achieved.
  • Lead by demonstrating the required behaviors, attitudes, and mindset to transition the current culture toward a Zero Injury/Illness culture.
 
 
 
 
The successful candidate will possess:
 
  • Completion of post-secondary education from a recognized institution in a health or hygiene related discipline. Supplemental education in management development or business administration would be considered an asset.
  • At least 3 - 5 years experience of progressively responsible related experience.
  • Sound knowledge of health & hygiene trends and issues within HSE, applicable legislation, regulations, codes and industry best practices.
  • Maintains in good standing a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) or Registered Occupational Hygienist (ROH) designation.
  • Senior level knowledge of subject matter related to industrial hygiene, pandemic preparedness, ergonomics, ability management, health protections/surveillance, and wellness.
  • Demonstrated capability in project management, including but not limited to project initiation, execution, and evaluation.
  • Experience managing the performance of health & hygiene programs within operational environments.
  • Proficient in the use of hygiene monitoring equipment (dosimeters, sampling pumps, direct reading instruments, etc.), the interpretation of monitoring results, and consolidation of findings and recommendations in written reports that meet the needs of intended audiences.
 
As our best candidate, you have experience facilitating effective relationships with external partners such as workers compensation, occupational health nurses and physicians, health & safety compliance entities, as well as building and maintaining strong partnerships with internal partners such as unions, human resources, and other business units (and front line operations) within the company. You demonstrate the ability to apply management practices with tangible effects on H&S culture, performance metrics, and recognition, while leading and influencing cross-functional teams and projects.   
 
You are highly organized, work well in a team environment, and show great initiative and integrity. You are skilled at both written and verbal communication, can tailor presentations to meet the needs of a diverse audience, and show a great amount of flexibility with a focus on continuous improvement. Above all, through your passion, experience, and commitment you are able to provide valuable health & hygiene services equal or greater than those from a third party external hygiene consultant.
